The dark souls games arnt hard and their difficulty qas deeply over egged by journalists

Not just journalists (they were hugely relevant in this, though, the most relevant, in fact), but also high profile players that incentivized a “just don’t get hit” play style with players that weren’t as experienced or as good as them, which then sort of became the “way” the game was played, so no one was leveling HP just to maximize damage (already a bad investment anyways since most of your damage until the late-ish midgame comes from upgrades, not stats*), and then they were getting one shot by every attack because they had no HP. This led to the completely wrong belief that Dark Souls was a game in which everything killed you in one hit, which is ironic, because Dark Souls 1 specifically lets you become so insanely tanky that you can take 2-3 grab attacks from bosses, back up a little, and use one of your nigh-instant 20 Estus to go back to 90% HP again.

i am seeing a lot of reposting lately, so here i am reblogging my own post. also, reverse google tends to only work for stuff like deviantart or twitter, so if you want to find a pixiv artist, use saucenao.

i cannot stress this enough, y’all need to stop supporting blogs that steal art. i don’t care how pretty the art is or how badly you want it on your blog.

Also: Rebloging is not the same as reposting!! If you see an artist on tumblr post a piece that you like SMACK that reblog button. But do NOT save/screenshot an image and post it on your own blog without getting permission

an art i made 10 days ago got reposted to Instagram a few days later.

the notes i got? ~300 on Tumblr, ~200 on Twitter. and it’s one of my more popular arts.

the notes the repost has? ~15.000 and still growing a few hundred every hour. traffic, likes, comments, interaction, recognition, praise, all of it going to a person who, with one click, stole something i spent hours making and years learning.

you wonder why artists quit fandom? this. this is why.

If you really want to share someone’s art and you don’t have permission, can’t get it due to language barriers, or otherwise it’s a pain to get this permission, just link to the piece without posting the image itself.

That way, you are not only sharing the piece in its natural habitat, you also give exposure to the artist themselves.

@exxay Don’t Get Hit was literally the zeitgeist surrounding Dark Souls 1 with a ton of people insisting the correct way to play the game was to grab the Dark Wood Grain Ring, be on light roll forever, and only build damage afterwards with very specific poise breakpoints. This slowly phased out as more PvPers found that poise and bulk is absolutely silly in DS1 (eventually leading to Giantdad) and that it translated very well into PvE and that, surprise surprise, nothing in this game actually one hit kills you except taking a shotgun of dark magic from the caster enemies in the DLC if you actually have bulk. And even then, it took a bit to truly permeate because a lot of the git gud don’t get hit people were also not at all PvPers so they had this disdain towards bulky builds. We eventually got to Giantdads and Flipping Havels but we absolutely had a period of time of Don’t Get Hit in the game in which you absolutely can get hit a whole bunch assuming you spend a couple of points into the Not Dying To A Single Hit stat.

So, Microsoft is terrible. Yes yes, the oldest claim in the world.

But specifically… I just hate how Windows 10 tries to conflate and confuse web searches with things on one’s own computer. The start menu should never do anything related to web-searching, especially if it purports to try to give examples of things that are on my hard drive!

This will make old, computer-illiterate people more malware-vulnerable. You have to maintain a strong distinction between “things that are on this computer (and maybe even included in Windows)” (safe, one hopes, or you already got pwned by it, probably), and “things on the web” (scary, dangerous, not to be trusted at all).

Eroding that barrier in the UI is awful. It just FEELS like a violation every time I start typing into the start bar, and it tries to show me ANYTHING web-related. My computer is NOT just an internet-portal! It has tons of stuff on it, and when I’m interacting with the OS, I ONLY want to see things that are already on here!

If I wanted to see something online, I would go to my browser! All the online stuff should be segregated into the browser!

Specific programs can access the internet; that’s fine. But my OS’s functions and interface should JUST be about the things that are already on my computer.

#someone in the notes mentioned shut up windows 10.

https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

i haven’t used this myself but i’ll be looking into it

Literally spent multiple hours lobotomizing my Windows reinstall when I upgraded recently, the amount of awful shit they had in nowadays makes me long for the age of win98, when software was merely bad, rather than actively harmful.

the exact setting in shutup10 for this issue is “Disable extension of Windows 10 search with Bing” it’s at the very bottom under misc.

There are 2 programs that will turn Windows 10 from an advertising riddled, bloated mess into a useful tool.

10AppsManager

With one click, this will remove ALL THE BLOATWARE Windows comes with. Seriously, you need NONE OF THESE apps, and if you do, you can just uninstall all the ones you don’t need individually.

image

Winaero Tweaker

This program will give you almost complete control over Windows 10’s behavior. Disabling the web search in the start menu, op rightfully complained about, is just one of the many things this thing can do

image

For example, with a single setting you can turn off any ads from microsoft, system-wide

image

It is a powerful tool, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily every single setting comes with an explanation about what it actually does, and most settings can be easily reversed.

Tech tip from my personal blog

reblogged in the hope that i’ll eventually both remember AND have the executive function (AT THE SAME TIME) to actually sit down and deal with this. win10 really is terrible.

Also, if you’re like me and utterly unable to handle the weird tile-style menu and just want to go back to the days of lists that make sense, check out OpenShell https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu

It’s a very simple program, and it turns the tile menu on win10 into something much more logical like this

image

Which i will never be able to live without, so it goes on every win10 machine I have to use regularly.

everyone in this post goes directly to heaven

“Classic anime had better production values” classic anime will go from a dude doing a jerky three-frame walk cycle across a static background, to an elaborately rotoscoped extreme closeup of him doing something with his hands, then back to the three-frame walk. It didn’t have better production values, it just had very specific ideas about how to allocate its budget.

Like, I get that the CGI backgrounds look cheesy, but you need to understand that in the pre-CGI era, that establishing shot would have been a slow horizontal pan across a shitty matte painting while the protagonist delivers a ponderous monologue with his back to the camera so they don’t have to animate his lips moving. Those costs are getting saved one way or another!

“‘mech pilots are horny because they get sweaty and fuck after the fights’ you pedestrian, mech pilots are horny because the neural feedback loop from striking an acquired target w/ +90% accuracy on a full flight of LRMs makes most pilots leak in their seat. It’s not about two pilots, separated by mountains of metal, learning to mutually respect the others skill it’s about how these industrial war machines have direct lines into their nervous systems and an oxytocin & dopamine tap directly linking destruction to pleasure.”
